Supporting Invisible Differences

Published: 24 May 2023

At Xerox, we strive to create a workplace culture that allows everyone to thrive. As we support people from all walks of life, we’re taking this opportunity to recognize World Autism Awareness Day. In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 2 as a time to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism so those with autism can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society. Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.

Enable_All, our employee resource group that supports team members and communities who have or are involved with disabilities (hidden or otherwise), partners with organizations that help people with autism reach their full potential.

Last year, our Xerox teams in Italy supported PizzAut, a company created by Nico Acampora, the father of an autistic child. He employs autistic people at his restaurants and partners with companies to help build employment pathways for autistic people. Nearly 100 Xerox employees contributed to opening a PizzAut in Monza, where 25 autistic children will be able to work and where Nico intends to start a training academy. Through a sports competition that converted physical activities into volunteer hours, Xerox raised more than $12,000. A special thanks to David Pistoia and Antonio Soares Pereira for contributing more than 200 hours each to the effort.

“PizzAut is a wonderful organization dedicated to enabling a brighter future for those with autism. I am proud to manage the relationship on behalf of Xerox and honored to have attended the opening of PizzAut’s second restaurant, which coincided with World Autism Awareness Day,” Benedetta Pacinico, EMEA Operations, shares. “Italy’s President

Sergio Mattarella attended the opening event, which garnered strong media attention. I look forward to continuing the relationship with the organization for many years. As Nietzsche said, do not forget that giving joy also gives joy.”

Whether you have autism, love someone who does or are looking to support a diverse, accepting and kind community, consider donating or volunteering with PizzAut or another organization devoted to supporting those with autism. Browse the Xerox Community Giving Tool for these opportunities.
