December 3rd is “Purple Sock Day”
International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed annually on December 3rd. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1992 to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development.
The day aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities and to advocate for their full and equal participation in society. Each year, the IDPD has a specific theme. For 2024, the theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” which emphasizes the importance of including persons with disabilities in decision-making processes.
Events are held worldwide, including at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where discussions, workshops, and celebrations take place to highlight the achievements and contributions of persons with disabilities. The day also serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to ensure accessibility and equality for all.
